Jump in: Jose Garrido’s, BS’03, journey from scholarship recipient to philanthropic leader

A full tuition scholarship set Jose Garrido, BS ’03, on the path to Vanderbilt. Now, he’s dedicated to creating the same opportunity for others as the connection to his alma mater continues to shape his philanthropy.

Garrido is an immersed and engaged leader. While in law school at the University of Miami, he volunteered as a CoRPs recruiter and played a key role in reviving the Miami Vanderbilt Chapter, later serving as its president for over a decade. Now, he continues his involvement as a member of the College of Arts and Science Advisory Council and recently became its inaugural chair.

Despite his many roles, Garrido remains most inspired by the scholarship that first brought him to Vanderbilt. “I want future students to have the same opportunity I had—to pursue their education without worry. Supporting the university is my way of paying forward the generosity that changed my life,” Garrido says.

Fifteen years ago, he established the Garrido Family Scholarship. Since then, four recipients have benefited. In addition to his scholarship work, Garrido has supported Vanderbilt’s physical and academic growth, including his recent involvement in the reimagining of Garland Hall. “Specifically, my contribution will be helping the Center of Latin American Studies,” he says.

Jose’s philanthropic values, instilled in him from a young age through his family’s culture of giving back, have guided his efforts over the years. However, his experiences at Vanderbilt have shaped his broader philanthropic philosophy, sharpening his focus on contributing to education and deepening his understanding of its impact. This philosophy now extends to schools in Miami, including his children’s elementary school and his high school, where he has taken on leadership roles and fostered meaningful partnerships.

The Garrido Family

He is also inspired by the proven excellence and achievement of Vanderbilt students. “I feel strongly about giving to the next generation. I think Vanderbilt does an incredible job of bringing together individuals who will be our next generation of leaders… I feel like I’m supporting and potentially making a real difference in their lives.”

Garrido remains optimistic about the opportunities his generosity may create, expressing his hope that “Vanderbilt will continue to churn out thoughtful and altruistic global leaders who respect others’ opinions and value high character. I think that’s a pretty common thread among most Vanderbilt students, regardless of the year [they] graduated.”

For anyone looking to kickstart their involvement at the university, Garrido’s advice is simple: “Jump in.”

“I think Vanderbilt has incredible people who are dedicated to whatever area you are most passionate about and that you want to contribute to. The reward of giving back to a place you deeply cherish is enough,” Garrido says. “You just have to get your feet wet first—just try it out, and you’ll see how great it is. And from then on… well, look at me. I’m fully immersed.”
